How HRT works
Replaces oestrogen
The fall in oestrogen is what drives most menopausal symptoms, and replacing it addresses the cause rather than masking it.
Progestogen protects the womb
If you still have a womb, progestogen is given alongside oestrogen to protect its lining.
Through the skin or by mouth
Patches and gel are absorbed through the skin, which avoids the small clot risk associated with tablets.
How to take HRT
- Apply or take daily
- Gel goes on the arm or thigh once a day. Patches are changed once or twice a week. Tablets are taken daily.
- Give it three months
- Symptoms usually improve within a few weeks, but finding the right dose often takes a review or two.
- Review regularly
- An annual review at minimum, and sooner if symptoms change or side effects appear.

Is HRT safe?
For most women under 60 starting within 10 years of menopause, the benefits outweigh the risks. Risks differ between types, and the transdermal forms avoid the small increase in clot risk seen with tablets. Your prescriber will go through what applies to you.
How long can I stay on it?
There is no arbitrary limit. It is a decision to review each year, based on your symptoms and your own risk profile.
How does the assessment work?
You answer a short set of questions about your health, your history and what you are hoping for. A UK registered prescriber reads every answer. If anything needs clarifying we contact you before your order is dispensed, and if the treatment is not appropriate we say so and explain why.
