How Orlistat works
Blocks an enzyme
Orlistat stops lipase breaking down some of the fat in your meal, so it passes through rather than being absorbed.
About a third of the fat
Roughly 30 per cent of the fat in a meal is not absorbed while you are taking it.
Works with your diet
It only acts on fat you eat, so it is most effective alongside a reduced fat diet.
How to take Orlistat
- One capsule with each main meal
- Up to three times a day, with or up to an hour after a meal containing fat.
- Skip it for a fat free meal
- If a meal contains no fat, that dose does nothing and can be missed.
- Keep fat moderate
- Very fatty meals make the digestive side effects considerably worse. Spreading fat evenly across the day helps.
